Tricky Workplace Situation Handled
- Back in my time in the Singapore military, I did not use a goal oriented approach when providing instructions to my platoon, which resulting in our exercise going awry. I had instead used a very frustrated an haphazard method of communication which resulted and issues and conflicts within the platoon. As we were all fatigued we were not able to think rationally and could not arrive at a proper decision. As a leader I should've explained the logic and rationale behind the decisions made and convey to people the benefits of the decision going forward to have a more united approach
- Education on disease state, potential procedures, comprehensive detail on options available
- Identify issue, explore avenues for solving, conduct diagnosis after gathering sufficient information, conduct assessment of action, act on the plan
- As a consultant I am in an environment where critical thinking and problem solving skills are a must have, and I am surrounded by people always looking sharpen their abilities. I have definitely seen a stark contrast from my time at McKinsey in my ability to problem solve through analysis and diagnosis, and have seen the output/ outcome in my client/ project work.
- People have different approaches to critical thinking for problem solving. Depending on the problem, some people may instill frameworks, others may use more unorthodox/ creative approaches. I personally was able to develop my skills better through playing chess - it gave me an opportunity to step back and view the problem from a wider lens to see all the possible moves. I would always define a problem and have a high level definition of success- what would I consider as problem solved? A hypothesis. and work towards that, to either prove/ disprove. There is no harm in going wrong, as long as you are adaptable and able to pivot. Course corrections and reiterations are always part of the process.
- 1)Lack of social life - reduces levels of oxytocin, which in turn reduces serotonin and dopamine, resulting in unhappiness 2) Poor health- unable to take some time to look after your health will result in constant health issues 3) Personal motivation - with all/most of your time focused on work, your personal motivation to build for yourself will reduce
- Stacking one activity with another ; e.g I will run after I close my laptop; will help take your mind off of work organically and help switch off
- Learn to stack activities, and block calendars. Learn that your life is what is most important to you, and your physical, mental and psychological health should all be given equal amounts of health
