Tricky Workplace Situation Handled
- When unsure about a decision, pretend you chose option A and for a few days, live how this feels. For the next few days, pretend you are living with Option B. Your gut will tell you which is the better option.
- We start with learning outcomes, and depending on the outcomes we want to achieve, then retro design the learning activities.
- Having kids obliges you to dedicate time without answering email or other work needs. Being very explicit with colleagues that there are "blackout" times where you are not available, e.g. 5-8m pm because you have family obligations helps. You have to be very diligent in sticking to them otherwise it becomes a slippery slope. Same for weekends. Often the work-life culture is set at the top. If you are a team leader, it is up to you to not send or answer emails over the weekend to emphasize the sanctity of personal time.
- A few tips: 1) Ask yourself when you are 80, will you remember this work task or extra time you are putting into work? 2) When work seems like the most important thing in the world, ask yourself would you rather lose your job or lose a valuable relationship? 3) Taking a break, especially to do physical exercise, increases blood flow to the brain and renders you more productive when you go back to work. 4) Every day strive to do activities in each of these spheres: 1) Social; 2)Professional; 3)Physical; and 4) Spiritual.
- 1- Worse immune system resulting in sickness, missing work days and even more stress. 2- Exhaustion leading to less creativity and productivity. 3- Worse relationships with family members, colleagues and students.
