- Generally these steps do work but not always since it depends on the employee and whether they respective you as a leader and whether they believe that you are able to help deal with the issue. However, allowing the employee the space to raise issues without being penalised is beneficial and can be a starting point to finding solutions to the issue or to determine next steps about the employee.
- Other steps can be to not delay in having the first initial conversation with the employee, document all conversations and meetings with the employee and to ensure that you follow through with the proposed recommended actions.
- Dealing with difficult employees is something you cannot avoid or put off since performance issues and toxic work environments can get worse if not addressing early on. Remember to be professional and calm when dealing with the employee and actively listen to them and allow them the opportunity to tell you what their concerns and issues are. Be direct and ask questions to better understand the problem and offer constructive feedback. Come up with a solution together with the employee and remember to follow through and follow up on the issue.

- It depends on the communication channels and platforms utilised by the manager. Open communication platforms e.g. anonymous feedback boxes, online forms etc can allow employees to be honest and open about issues without fear of being victimised. Also to review issues and brainstorming sessions find solutions together can serve to build trust and cohesiveness in the team.

- I wish I had a leader who would be supportive me and my ideas and interests for projects and the organisation instead of being told no. I would have appreciated understanding why these ideas were not feasible and how I could improve. I would also have like to havea leader who would be able to mentor/coach me on technical matters as needed to be able to improve my understanding instead of having to figure out things on my own.
